Think of Pediatric Occupational Therapy as a way to help your child gain the "skills for the job of living." For a child, that "job" is playing, learning, and growing.
If your child is struggling with everyday tasks that other kids seem to pick up naturally, an OT helps bridge that gap through purposeful play.
Self-Care: OTs help kids master daily "independence" tasks, such as buttoning a shirt, using a fork, tying shoelaces, or brushing their teeth.
Motor Skills and Coordination: This area focuses learning skills for how kids use their bodies. Developing these skills allows children to master tasks like fastening buttons or zipping up a jacket, using a spoon and fork without spilling, and pouring their own water. It also builds the balance and spatial awareness needed to safely navigate stairs or help carry a basket of toys.
Self-Regulation: This is about helping your child manage their emotions and body energy. If a child gets easily overwhelmed, has "big meltdowns," or can’t sit still to focus, OT can teach them tools to calm their nervous system and react appropriately to the world around them.
An OT session usually looks like a fun play date. Whether they are climbing through an obstacle course or playing with putty, the therapist is actually working on the hidden physical and mental "gears" that help your child feel confident and capable.
If your child could benefit from occupational therapy, we’d love to hear from you. Please call us to discuss their needs and learn how Rock River Therapy can support your family in achieving their goals.
